Ed Parton BLOG F.A.Q.

What is a Blog or Weblog?

A blog (aka weblog or web log) is a web page that is frequently updated, usually with personal insights and links to other sites. Each blog entry is typically short and to the point, sometimes with a link to a longer, extended entry.

In many cases, most people can’t tell the difference between a blog, a wiki, and a standard website. In fact, they really are all the same thing. These days, the primary definition of a blog is a website that is built by blog software such as WordPress, Blogger, or LiveJournal.

Why do I blog?

My posts, hopefully, will be marked by greatness, especially in degree. Maybe they will be special, transcending ordinary means of measurement. Passion, knowledge and experience... as long as there are a bunch of people searching for information on something, a blog post has probably been written about it. And there is always someone who knows more than you. What do you remember about my blog posts? If you can remember what you discovered while you read my post a week later, I have accomplished my goal.

Where do you get ideas for your posts?

Blogging is writing. I try to have a topic and I always have an opinion. I try to find things on the internet that people don't know anything about. Super interesting places, items, people, gadgets, tips, the unique, the far-out, the esoteric and the eclectic. Pretty much any kind of weirdness, zaniness or mysteriousness.

I look for tips, tricks, trends, taking a personal photo every day for a year (like your lunch just before you eat it), anything really. The universe is your sandbox. Play a bit. Toss some sand around. Build a castle. It's your blog!

Could be. Depends on what you want to say, to the world, and you have enough time to spend discussing your ideas and projects. Or anything else you want to say. Could be you have a cause you want to fight for. Maybe it is just your favorite hobby. Perhaps, you just want to rant at the universe and offer up your unique opinion.

How do I do a blog?

"HOW" is really pretty easy. I try not to post the same posts as everyone else and always seek to make my posts have a good effect. How you do your blog depends entirely on you. You can make it fun. You can make it serious. You can post lists of things to do or things that you like. Just say what you want to say.

Listed throughout my blog are posts and links to resources that will get you started. There is no "one" way to do a blog. Be yourself and be honest.

How are blogs used?

Traditionally, blogs were used as something like an online diary. They included links that the author had found interesting that day, as well as, life stories.

But as blogs became more and more popular, businesses started to use them. The first industry to really embrace blogs was the news media. Journalists post their stories to the blog and readers subscribe to the blog news feeds to receive up-to-the-minute information on a variety of topics. Now, blogs are used for many different purposes. Ranting can be a great way to let off steam but you need to find a topic you're passionate about.

  • Personal diaries
  • News feeds
  • Hourly, daily, weekly updates of websites
  • New information on a topic
  • Product updates: reviews, new versions, new products
  • This day in history
  • Birthdays, Holidays and other special events
  • Almost anything you can think of

Tell me what you think?

People Will Tell You What They Think...

If you've got an opinion, expect that not everyone will agree with you. That's fine: a bit of discussion is great! I am prepared for readers to tell me what they think. Depending on the nature of my posts and the popularity of my blog, the comments section can get sometimes get quite heated.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's worth remembering that if you put something online, you're not talking to yourself. Even if nobody reads my blog today, what's to say they won't see it a few months from now?

How long is this going to last?

I want to build a long-term audience at my blog.

The 1 - 2 - 3 for me:

  • Knowledge: I have to know what I'm talking about. It will soon become apparent if I don't. I try to express what my experience knows!
  • Passion: I enjoy blogging and plan to be around for a while. I write what I like and have been doing so for many years.
  • Perseverence: NEVER give up. Well, not for very long anyway. Blogging isn't always easy.
I try to write what interests me and I try to make my posts fun.

What is the difference?

Endless questions. The thirst for knowledge. Quest for truth. Responsible answers. Help for difficulties. Living life better. Making wise decisions. A hopelessly incureable fantasizing romantic...are all great thoughts.

  • Who said so?
  • Who is he?
  • How does he know?

All of the above give you means to make good CHOICES . You are what you choose.

100 Top Ten List?

The top ten blog lists of anything. Google top ten lists.

Who are you REALLY?

I am just little old me. I am retired US Army and live a quiet life near Atlanta. My daughter is a rock star and my son is stumbling around the world just like me. I am a prepper and love being a survivalist for the Zombie Apocalypse by reading "end of the world" disaster paperbacks.

I love Science Fiction and Fantasy novels and read voraciously (that means A LOT). I tend a wonderful church and am a follower of Jesus Christ. That's a lot different from being a "christian." Go ahead, ask me.

There is no 100% way to protect your work online. There is no foolproof way that will protect you from possibly using something that is copyrighted by someone else. All you can really do is give credit on things that you use. Link to other sources religiously. And be ready to take something down if you get a complaint from someone that says you are using their material. I am just blogging with information. I am not making money on other people's copyrighted property. I only try to make a profit on content that I TOTALLY create myself.

Who knows? Maybe you will get credit for what YOU do and go VIRAL... veni vidi blogi -- I came, I saw, I blogged it.
